When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes

When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes Often, bad writing is a result of trying too hard to impress. When youre looking for work- especially if its been a while since your last interview- youre usually very keen to make a good first impression, but ironically, you may end up doing the opposite.Using too many adjectives may elend seem like a bad thing at first. You know that youre amazing, brilliant, and talented, but getting it across in a few paragraphs of text can be challenging. However, describing yourself or your experience with too many adjectives is probably not the best way to convince a potential employer of your many great qualities.Adjectives fall into two general categories broad and specific. Broad adjectives are little better than filler they take up space without adding anything significant. Consider the difference between the following sentences which one is more convincing?A I am a fantastic, dedicated, and highly skilled employee with an impressive work history.B I have fifteen years of experience and mastery of the four most common software tools used in the industry. Both of these sentences convey the same basic information- the writer has skills and experience- but instead of using broad adjectives to qualify those statements, the second sentence uses concrete, specific examples. Generally, if you make vague statements about your abilities paired with over-the-top adjectives, the person reading your resume will assume that youre over-inflating your worth.Another common mistake is using lazy verbs instead of action verbs. According to the folks over at The Muse, most resume bullet points begin the same way led, managed, or responsible for. They compiled a list of 185 action verbs to revitalize those tired old bullet points. Lazy verbs are often vague or boring, and they dont do a very good job of showing the reader what font of action you actually did. Thats why so many of these verbs need a little help from an adjective or adverb- but weve already seen how they dont solve the problem, either. To generate a personalized list of action verbs for your job search, spend some time thinking about what you did and what you accomplished at your previous position. Make a list, and then break out the thesaurus to find inspiration for more robust verbs. You can also find excellent verbs in the job postings themselves. Businesses often respond better to certain keywords- and in the case of automated software, those keywords may even be the difference between your resume ending up in front of a real person or in the trash- so dont be afraid to copy their language. While being specific is good, using corporate jargon is almost always a bad idea. George Orwell, in his essay Politics and the English Language, advocated for people to use plain, straightforward language. Unfortunately, many businesses have gone the opposite direction, using indecipherable jargon or buzzwords like synergy or inc entivize. Check out this list of corporate-speak and immediately cut any of the words that show up in your resume or titelbild letter.Failing to proofread is one of the worst sins you can commit in your resume or cover letter. Of course, were a little biased since Grammarlys mission is to help clean up typos and grammar mistakes, but even minor mistakes can telegraph negative traits to a potential employer. After all, if you dont pay attention to detail in such an important document, hiring managers will assume that youre careless in other areas of your professional life.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom

How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United KingdomBy Nathalie LotTrying to find a new job after college can be daunting in this economy. Trying to find one in another country is even trickier. But sometimes we need a shake-up or a kick-start, and once we go down that road, there is no telling where we will end up.If you are contemplating hopping over the pond to have a go at living in a country with a long standing Queen, there are a few things you should know.In order for a U.S. citizen to get a U.K. work permit, you will need to have someone (usually an employer) sponsor your visa. Its not easy and can be time consuming to get all the relevant documentation together, but once youre here, itll be worth it.As in the U.S., if you have the skills that are being cried out for, the sponsorship and visa process may go a little more smoothly and quickly in the U. K. Taking a look at theU.K. Border Agency Occupation Shortage List, we discuss some sectors that employers are looking to recruit from overseas.U.K. health and social care employers are in desperate need to fill positions. From health care assistants and nurses to brain surgeons, the health care ordnungsprinzip is straining under the pressure of being understaffed. If you are applying to be a nurse, ensure your nursing college program offers 1,500 hours of practice throughout your degree and 2,500 hours teaching time. You may cause a fuss with the U.K. Nursing and Midwifery Council when you register to practice if you dont fit the requirement. Nurses trained in the U.K. are expected to gain this level of experience before being allowed to graduate. Similar guidelines are there for doctors. The U.K. also is losing a lot of scientists and professional engineers and cant train people quick enough to replace them. If you have clinical neurophysiology, geology, oil and gas, mechanical or a erospace engineering skills, you are desperately wanted in the U.K.Depending on the type of role for which you are applying, you may be expected to have the equivalent of an NVQ Level 3 to a degree in your chosen field. You may also be required to have experience in your industry. Its best to check what kind of companies are hiring from the States in order to see how easy it would be to gain sponsorship for a visa.Interestingly enough, there is also a shortage of chefs in the U.K. Unfortunately you cant just pop over and get a job as a commis chef. According the UKBA shortage list, to qualify for a visa, you need to have at least five years of experience in the industry and be able to go into a sous chef or head chef role. So, dodgy fast food dives do not count. As with most catering roles, companies usually ask for experience in a similar environment. Even though you have been Head Chef in your local Italian restaurant for five years, it may not be enough for the Hilton to hire you. The U.K. also is in need of environmental professionals, especially in the green industry, programming and software developers, and mathematics and science teachers. If you have these skills, your next step is to do your research into your specific function and to see whether its on the occupation shortage list. If it is, research what employers requirements are to work in the U.K. Maybe the job requires certain Health and Safety certificates or specific experience that you might not have due to different training systems in the U.S.If you are already working for a company that has U.K. offices, see if there are any opportunities to transfer abroad. It is slightly easier for companies to transfer current employees than it is for a U.K. company to hire someone from the U.S.If you fit all these criteria, have found a job and received your visa, its time to relax. But not for long, since you now have to organise moving to the U.K. and working your way around the utility and cable servi ces, figure out what your Council Tax is and whether you have to pay it.On the plus side, you get free health care Not to mention, youll be in a brand new country where new adventures await you.Nathalie Lot is a freelance journalist in London forstrike-jobs.co.uk.

The subtle art of doing background research (without being creepy)

The subtle art of doing background research (without being creepy)The subtle art of doing background research (without being creepy)One of the most common suggestions every job hunter hears is to conduct research on the company and the interviewees themselves before an interview. And, yes, doing research is a critical part of job prep that applicants should invest in.But with all the information we currently have at our fingertips, what is the fine line between showing youve done your homework and totally creeping someone out?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraHere are some rules of engagement for doing adequate research to ace your interview, while finding the happy medium that keeps you firmly out of stalker territory.LinkedIn Is A Solid YesAs the most professional of networks, LinkedIn is the first place you should go to learn important information about the hiring manager, such as their alma mater, former employment, professional accomplishments and any shared LinkedIn groups. Then during the interview, find clever ways to subtly throw in some of the interesting things you have unearthed, suggests Chris Chancey, founder of Amplio Recruiting. For example, instead of coming right out and saying, I welches doing some background research and saw you won the Top 50 Marketing Managers Award, (creepy), you could find an opportune time to throw in your discovery. So when the interviewee asks you what interests you about the position, you could say something like, I am always looking for a manager who will challenge me to be my best so your recent award gave me confidence in your skills.Or if you find that you attended the same college or have a former place of employment in common, be sure to mention it. These types of commonalities can be great conversation points, Chancey says. Be careful about mentioning shared contacts, though. Some people accept tons of Linke dIn invitations and they might not even know the person youre talking about. But Keep Your Sleuthing AnonymousWhile this is more a choice than a hard rule, some job applicants prefer to go incognito, rather than broadcast that theyve visited a particular profile multiple times, points out Rudeth Shaughnessy, retired human resources director and editor at Copy My Resume. You can use an incognito browser in Chrome to view LinkedIn while you are officially logged out, which means it wont notify the person you have viewed their profile, or you can change your settings to view other peoples profile anonymously, even when youre logged in.Just head over to your Account Settings, select Settings and Privacy, select Profile Viewing Options, and then select What Others Can See When You View Their Profile- from your name and headline to your title to totally anonymous.Of course, others might suggest that its smart to leave a record that you did your due diligence through a page visit, but just m ake sure you dont end up there multiple timesthats when it can edge into creepy.Tread Lightly With Other Social MediaSince people are more laid back when they share information on Facebook or Instagram, this can provide some very casual information that can take the edge off of the interview process. But you want to avoid specifically mentioning you checked them out on Facebook or make an overly personal about what you found there. So, for example, statements such as, I saw you went to Hawaii for vacation that must have been lovely are too obvious- and thus cringy.Instead, find smart ways to weave in the fact that you love coastal destinations or that you have kids who play baseball if youve seen their sports photos. Keep these casual conversations very short and read the interviewers body to see whether they are comfortable talking about personal stuff, Chancey recommends. But Shaughnessy suggests steering clear of these types of social media profiles altogether. There is no point l ooking for someones Instagram or Facebook profile as you cant use that information in your interview- but it might lead to negative preconceptions.Do Some Other Stealth Searchingin addition to the obvious social media platforms, you can do additional research that is both professional and impressive by searching their name in conjunction with their company name, suggests Deborah Sweeney, CEO at MyCorporation. Youll often find articles where they have been featured, which is a great way to see their work and find out more about them. This type of information is totally fair game, and gives you the opportunity to have some memorable discussion points during your interview. For example, you could mention something noteworthy you read about their recent absatzwirtschaft campaign and strategy. Acknowledging this kind of business achievement shows youre genuinely interested in joining the organization and that you admire their work, Sweeney says.Visit the companys social media accounts to read up on recent public announcements, and you can also visit check out your hosts recent activity on LinkedIn or Twitter and comment or share, which shows you are paying attention to their content.Bottom Line, Be SubtleWhile there are no hard and fast rules, the best way to see if the information youre using goes too far is to test your own reaction.Think about what might make you cringe if you were the one conducting the interview- mentioning kids, pets or hobbies? If you think it would be creepy if it happened to you, consider that a potential red flag not to mention it in your interview, suggests Kelly Anderson, marketing director at Wealth Continuum GroupWhile researching your interviewee can give you a leg up in a competitive job market, the rule of thumb is to avoid mentioning outright that you have been looking them up or making any remark that can be deemed too personal, says Chancey. Keep it subtle, light and short. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals th at will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Get a Job as a Computer Programmer

How to Get a Job as a Computer ProgrammerHow to Get a Job as a Computer ProgrammerAre you interested in a career as a computer programmer? Heres the scoop on what you need to get started including education and experience requirements, where to find job listings, and tips for acing an einstellungsgesprch. Education and Training Requirements for Programmers Most computer programmers have a bachelors degree with a major or concentration of coursework in computer science or information technology. Some programmers earn an associates degree in a computer-related discipline. A few programmers may only have a high school degree, but in these cases, they have accomplished asignificantamount of programming work. Programmers can earn certifications from software companies or product vendors to demonstrate proficiency in various computer languages or programming on certain platforms. Computer programmers need strong analytical skills to generate the code to automate complex processes. They must be able to interview clients or end users to determine their technology needs and communicate options for programs in a language that non-technical users can easily comprehend. Problem-solving skills are required to troubleshoot issues when programs dont function optimally. Programmers must be detail oriented and precise to create code to exact specifications or find minor problems in long streams of code. High school and college students aiming for programming jobs should consider creating applications for digital devices as a way to demonstrate their programming acumen and creativity. Most high schools now offer programming courses which can be an excellent testing ground for aspiring programmers. Research the programming languages and skills in highest demand by searching Google with phrases like best computer programming skills or most important computer programming skills. Write programs that showcase these skills with the help of online tutorials, books, and courses. How to Find a Job as a Computer Programmer Candidates who can show prospective employers actual programs which they have created will have the easiest time landing jobs. Programmers should create a web-based portfolio of their programming projects which can be easily shared with employers and networking contacts. Obtain alumni contacts through your career amtsstube or from your faculty. Reconnect with previous employers where you worked as an intern or even as a basic service employee, and ask for introductions to computer professionals whom they know. Reach out to family friends and Facebook contacts and ask for referrals to the computer types whom they know. Approach these contacts to schedule meetings to get some feedback about your portfolio and advice about your job search. These informational interviews will give your contacts a chance to gain an appreciation for your skills and can often lead to referrals for job interviews. Utilize specialized IT websites like Dice.com to g enerate a list of job leads. Search job sites like Indeed.com, Simplyhired.com, and LinkUp.com by keywords like programmer or computer programmer and by your favorite computer languages to expand your list of job targets. If youre a college student or graduate, check with your career office for job listings and recruiting opportunities. Check out IT job fairs, likeUNCUBED, which focuses on jobs at startups, in your preferred locations for employment. Dream a little. Generate a list of your ideal IT employers, visit their jobs websites and apply for jobs. Review lists like Forbes Best Companies to Work For to generate some ideas. Interviewing for Programmer Jobs Interviews for programmers tend to be quite different from the standard interview process. Interviewers will ask typical behavioral questions to determine if candidates can reference examples of problem-solving, troubleshooting, communication with clients, and users and tolerance for frustration. Recruiters will also test the technical knowledge of candidates by asking them to explain and define programming terms and processes. Some interviewers will pose hypothetical problem-solving questions which will test the thought processes of candidates. For example, you might be asked to figure out how many cars pass over the George Washington Bridgeon a typical day. Employers will be interested in your logical reasoning skills rather than a right answer. You may be asked to create a sample program using pseudo code to solve a hypothetical problem on a whiteboard. Employers will be looking for you to demonstrate a logical approach to programming. Your emphasis should be on your process and how you explain your method. Interviewers sometimes ask programming candidates to review the code for a program to identify and correct any errors. Check Company Websites Many large tech companies have interviewing advice specific to their company available online. For example, Google has a Hangout on Air where Google rs talk about how they interview candidates at Google and share advice on the best way to prepare for a technical interview. Amazon has a list of FAQs including information on the interview process, what to wear, and what you will need to provide. Follow Up After the Interview Effective follow up after your job interview is critical. Compose a thank you email immediately after the interview and clearly convey your enthusiasm for the job and why you think it is an excellent fit, as well as your gratitude for the opportunity to interview.

Ageing workforce means future teacher shortages

Ageing workforce means future teacher shortages Ageing workforce means future teacher shortagesPosted October 13, 2011, by Louisa Veidelis An ageing workforce in the education sector may mean upcoming skills shortages at schools and TAFE institutions. The average age of Australian school teachers is now 45 years old, and 33 per cent of permanent school teachers will reach retirement age in the next five years, according to the NSW Auditor-Generals Report which examines employment trends in NSW schools (February 2008). The Department of Education and Training is faced with the loss of large numbers of retiring teachers and their associated skills, said Peter Achterstraat, Auditor-General of NSW. While the overall impact of the ageing workforce is likely to be gradual, there is still a risk of teacher shortages. Many industries are being affected by the ageing Australian workforce, but it is expected to hit the education workforce particularly hard because the average age of teachers i s greater than that of any industry sector. Certain jobs, such as maths and science teachers, are expected to experience significant shortages, according to the NSW Auditor-Generals Office. So if youre looking for a new career that will grow during the financial downturn, now could be the time to study for that diploma of education. Millennial women are using gassing to help support each other at work

Millennial women are using gaspirining to help support each otzu sich at workMillennial women are using gassing to help support each other at workA compliment is defined as a polite expression of praise or admiration. Something like Nice handwriting or Cute haircut would fall under this category. But in this post MeToo era, Millennial women have taken on a new, highly exaggerated as well as highly energized way of psyching each other up when speaking to each other. This form of communication was identified by the cultural surveyors over at Man Repeller as gassing. Writer Emma Bracy defined it as, Hyping. Blatantly bigging up. Telling someone, unprompted, that you appreciated their hustle up those stairs,or that outfit, or the way their edges are laid. Sending text messages out of the blue that say things like, In case no one told you today, youre the sh-t. And that ass? Amazing . If youre looking for more examples just watch any episode of Broad City.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIts basically taking the animated You go girl of the 90s and boosting it up by about 60 amps. After all, we didnt start answering every affirmative question with a declaration of Yasssss Queen until the last few years. Fun fact the elongated Yasssss actually came from Bali culture as a form of encuragement and then infiltrated into our world of social media when an over-exuberant fan of Lady Gagas (is there any other kind?) met her and, as most of us can relate, could only simply say a long Yasssss in a perfect combination of praise, excitement and just bewildered awe.Gassing at workNow, much of this type of speech is reserved for the comment section of Instagram or when greeting someone at brunch if they are pulling off a hat but should women, especially Millennial and Gen Z women, be using this heightened way of talking in the workplace?Bevin Prince and Brittney Levine, the ho sts and founders of theBe My Neighbor podcast, which is aimed at Millennial women, told Ladders they think gassing is absolutely acceptable in the workplace. In our opinion, were elated that the gassing subject is being brought up and even a thing. There is a definitely an overdoing it type of support, but if women genuinely mean it and respond to their female friends/perfect female strangers pictures, posts, achievements, etc. with genuine support, we feel that were all the better for it. It takes a lot for another woman to voice her support, purely because she might have her own insecurities.Elizabeth Tuke (or Tuke as she is fondly known), the CEO and founder of Tuke Consulting (and well-known p.r. genius whose clients include Malone Souliers and LBV and she was Meghan Markles publicist before she became a Princess) told Ladders, Any type of unsolicited ego boost is a means of positive reinforcement and I am a big advocate of it. I have experienced both reserved and conservative c olleagues, who withhold encouragement or sharing their excitement for others success. Hyping up, pumping up or boosting the spirit of your peers, colleagues or employees simply infuses energy into the workplace just as it does on a playing field filled with athletes.Good as goldBut why is this dramatic way of speaking so essential right now? First of all, lets look at the psychology of compliments. Unfortunately, even the most confident of humans needs a compliment every once in a while. As Mark Twain said,I can live for two months on a good compliment. A 2012 study actually found that a compliment can help improve performance with a task at the same equivalency as giving someone cash to do the same task.Professor NorihiroSadato, the study lead and professor at theNational Institute for Physiological Sciences inJapan said of the research,To the brain, receiving a compliment is as much a social reward as being rewarded money. Weve been able to find scientific proof that a person per forms better when they receive a social reward after completing an exercise. Complimenting someone could become an easy and effective strategy to use in the classroom and during rehabilitation. So this over-emphasized use of laudation could be very essential in the workplace. Plus, if work is particularly stressful or, you know, you exist in the world, gassing can be a strategy for survival. Over-the-top support for one another is something that women have used historically in difficult times,Diane Barth, LCSW, told Well and Good. Its one way of counteracting cultural and personal denigration of women t- coming up with superlatives for who women are and what we do. Plus, with Instagram likes possibly becoming an endangered species soon, we are going to need a real-life equivalency as soon as possible.Sara Levine, the Editor in Chief of Betches Media, a millennial media platform, told Ladders, I think gassing or building other women up is only beneficial in the workplace. Complimenti ng another woman on a job well done is not going to diminish your own career prospects - success is not a zero-sum game. On the contrary, if phrased appropriately for the workplace, gassing can help motivate. And in a society where women are constantly being put down, by men and other women, who better than our peers to help build us up?Blake noted, Tous, wherewerefacedwithbeingtoldNO on adailybasis, whether its in an audition room or board room, having each other as support systems have benefitedusgreatly. I tell Bevin when she looks beautiful andifI think she looks crazy (hard to do), andwecan laugh and joke about it all.Wehave gotten to the point wherewetrust one another and know that evenifweretalking aboutourpersonal achievements its not considered boastingbecausethe support is met on the other side. Perhaps if Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scotts had just spoken to each other in this manner they could have avoided so many conflicts (and a lot of bloodshed.) Mary could have sa id something about Elizabeths amazing ability to pull off the impossible to pull off Geisha meets Bozo the Clown aesthetic.Go deeperHowever, jokes aside, the gassing does need to be authentic Prince and Blake noted. Now there has been criticism that women focus too much on complimenting each others appearances can have negative effects and though gassing may focus on an aesthetic perhaps at first it goes deeper than that. It is just good old-fashion cheerleading with accentuation. It is as the kids say extra.Kim Palmer, CEO of womens wellness app, Clementine, told EveryWoman, Women really struggle to do their own PR, especially in the workplace, because they dont like to show off. Class of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job Prospects

Class of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job ProspectsClass of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job ProspectsAs if the class of 2010which has been out of law school for about a year nowneeded a reminder of how depressing the legal job market has been, NALP just released its Employment Report and Salary Survey for the Class of 2010. According to NALP,The overall employment satz for new law school graduates is, at 87.6%, the lowest it has been since 1996, when the rate stood at 87.4%. In addition to a lower overall employment rate than that measured for the classes that immediately preceded it, the Class of 2010 employment data reveal a job market with many underlying structural weaknesses, and the employment profile for this class marks the interruption of employment patterns for new law school graduates that have been undisturbed for decades. The employment rate has not been this low for a law school class since 1996. Another apparent trend from the data is that fewer law students are obtaining jobs that require passage of the bar exam NALP found that of those 2010 graduates for whom employment was known, only 68.4% obtained a job for which bar passage is required. This compares with 70.8% for the Class of 2009 and 74.7% for the Class of 2008 and is the lowest percentage NALP has ever measured. An additional 10.7 percent of 2010 law school graduates secured positions that prefer or call for a JD but do not demand bar exam passage this rate is higher than the Class of 2009 rate of 9.2 percent. Finally 8.6 percent of 2010 law grads are employed in other capacities.NALP gathered its data in February 2011approximately nine months subsequent to the graduation dates for most 2010 law school graduatesand based its study on graduates with known statuses, rather than on the total number of graduates. The organization determined that the employment rate for the Class of 2010 based on total number of graduates was 84.1 percent (but NALP also noted that one cannot assume that the un known statuses equate with unemployment).NALP press release ABA Journal sourceRead More Law Grad Sues Law School for Lack of Transparency Unprecedented, Enormous Law School Debt The Future of Legal Education Stop Resisting and Get Creative CONNECT WITH VAULT LAW ON TWITTER VaultLaw

To have what you want, give-up whats holding you back

To have what you want, give-up whats holding you backTo have what you want, give-up whats holding you backIf you pay attention to your life, youll begin to landsee the patterns. In 2005, the National Science Foundation published an article showing that the average person has between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before. The things running through your head are the same things that were running through your head yesterday. The conversations youre having with yourself are the same conversations youve been having with yourself. You know what to do.You know what you want.Said Tim Grover in his book, Unstoppable, Dont think. You already know what you have to do, and you know how to do it. Whats stopping you?Fear of the unknown is the foundation of all fearsAccording to some scholars, fear of the unknown is likely the foundation of all other fears. In order to avoid the unknown, most people bail on the ir dreams in exchange for remaining in lives they hateIn the mega-selling book (over 6 1000000 sold), The Easy Way To Quit Smoking, Allen Carr explains that one of the primary reasons people stay in addiction is because they fear the unknown. Even though people know their addiction is literally killing them, it has become their homeostasis. To not be in the addiction is frightening, because you have no idea what that looks or feels like anymora.Even though you KNOW life could be fundamentally better, you hold tightly to what you have. You hold on to what you have while knowing that it is the very thing stopping you from getting what you really want. And so the thoughts recur, daily. 95% of those thoughts and cycles continue, all the while you intuitively know that you are making a fools bargain.Youre giving up your dreams and your greatest potential for something you know isnt serving you.Professional film-maker, Casey Neistat put it this way, What is the ultimate quantification of s uccess? For me, its not how much time you spend doing what you love. Its how little time you spend doing what you hate.Openness to new experiencesThink positively about yourself. ask God who made you to keep on remaking you. - Norman Vincent Peale, The Power Of Positive ThinkingWhen you open yourself to new experiences, you open yourself to change. Obviously, being open to new experiences is hard. In order for you to truly be open, you must be humble. You must be open to being changed. You must be willing to absorb what your new experiences make of you.The Latin root of humility is connected to earth, ground, and soil. The words humility and humidity are very closely connected.Humidity is the moisture.Humility is the soil.Humble soil ABSORBS the moisture. Non-humble soil is hard and unable to accept all of the nutrients the humidity is trying to give it.Your life is talking to you.Its been talking to you for a long time.Youve seen the signals.Youve had the conversations over and over in your head. You could continue having this conversation for the rest of your life and remain in your safety zone. But if you did, youd always have the regret. Youd always wonder what might have been. Youd always know you could have had something better. And that you chose the lesser path.Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach once said, The moment you have arrived is the perfect time to start out again.Even success can become a block to future success. Its easy to hold on to a particular role or identity that youve formulated for yourself. Dan Sullivan also explains happiness comes when your future is bigger than your past.In order for your future to be bigger than your past, you must move beyond it. You must stop living in your pastLet it go.Let it be what it was - the good and the bad.Take everything youve learned from it, but dont be defined by it. If you want something much bigger and better, youll have to do things differently. Said Marshall Goldsmith, What got you here wont get yo u there.Similarly, Leonardo DiCaprio said, Every next level of your life will require a different you.You can make this change. You can give up what you have for what you want.Create a list of everything you want in exchange for what you must give upThere are two main types of motivation push and pull.Push motivation is a behavior that an individual forces themselves to complete in order to satisfy a need or achieve a goal.Pull motivation is a behavior that an individual feels drawn towards.Push motivation is rough. Its exhausting, depleting, and requires constant willpower, which quickly burns-out.Pull motivation is much more powerful. It draws you forward, and actually gives you more energy while youre doing it.If you want to make permanent change, you cant do it by pushing. Instead, you need to be pulled. Dr. David Hawkins said there is a potent difference between power and force. Forcing things to happen complicates and ultimately breaks them down. Power, on the other hand, comes from doing what you know you should. Come what may. In order to have power, you must have courage. You must do what is right and for the right reasons. You must draw upon powers beyond your own.I recently pulled out my journal and began thinking of the recurring thoughts that have been running through my head.As someone who constantly seeks change, luckily, many of my thoughts are not recurring.Im constantly meeting new people, working on new projects, reading new books, and engaging in new environments.I seek heavily to create new and transformational experiences constantly. However, there are still a few recurring thoughts I have yet to address. There are things I know are holding me back from the life I truly want.So I made a list of EVERYTHING I wanted in my life.EVERYTHING I could think of.It was a huge list.I wrote about my family and the welfare, health, and success of my children. My wife and I recently adopted three kids who we fought for in court for three years. Now my wif e is pregnant with twins Its crazy.I wrote about how I wanted my kids to be happy, healthy, and successful.I wrote about all of my financial dreams. And my career dreams. And my health dreams. I wrote about the person I wanted to become and the life I wanted to live. I wrote about all the people I wanted to help.By the end of all of this, I had a huge list.I loved looking at that list. Then I thought about the recurring thoughts and patterns.Am I willing to give up what Ive got in order to have something better? I asked myself.Yes.Yes, I am.Are you?Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately.
